This is part of a series of
talks for Sideshow.
[insertspace] have invited
six artists to make artworks for the advertising space on Nottingham
City Transport bus tickets.
The bus ticket is an example
of a piece of everyday paraphernalia that punctuates our lives. 'Conditions
of Carriage' aims to explore the value and conversely the disposability
of the artwork in relation to our daily routine.
The selected artists work inventively within this context and explore
the ephemeral fragments of our daily lives be it through linguistics,
aesthetics or material value.
We are interested in prolonging, and exploring the value of the bus
ticket once it loses its original function.
By inviting artists to explore contexts of validity, disposability
and identity, we want to open up discussion on the relationship between
the viewer and the artwork.
We hope that the project will encourage an inquisitive response from
passengers as well as a sense of participation in Nottingham's art
scene, and the British Art Show. The tickets have the potential to
become collectable items, although we anticipate that many of the
tickets will be disregarded and disposed of in the everyday way they
are normally used. This again raises questions about the value and
longevity of the artworks, as well as the function of the artwork.
